Spoiler warning: If you haven’t been keeping up to date with Marvel’s cinematic Universe, you probably should go and do so before reading this.
It’s not out yet, but The Avengers: Endgame is likely to see the end of Marvel’s ultimate on-screen villain (so far), Thanos.
During Infinity War, we saw the mad Titan succeed in his plan to eradicate half of the universe’s population with a single snap of the Infinity Gauntlet. Some of our favourite heroes perished right before our eyes into a pile of dust, leaving us all shocked as the movie credits rolled.
However, we can see that most of these heroes are still cast in the final chapter to Marvel’s phase three, meaning this whole catastrophe surely gets resolved somehow. How they do this though, I have no idea, we’ll find out soon enough.
Looking ahead of this, it’s clear that Disney plans to keep Marvel’s Cinematic Universe going. Assuming that Thanos is stopped for good, this leaves the question of who will be the next major threat? Well, there’s actually a fair few options on who it could be, but here’s who we think it’s most likely to be:
Galactus
For those who don’t know, Galactus is a cosmic entity that consumes worlds to sustain his life force. We’ve seen him before in one of the old Fantastic Four movies, the one with the Silver Surfer, but… let’s just pretend that never happened.
Since Galactus is a devourer of worlds, he’d be a massive threat to everyone on Earth and any other planet in the universe really. It would take a lot to stop him in his tracks.
Doctor Doom
Doctor Victor Von Doom is usually portrayed as the arch nemesis of Reed Richards (Mr. Fantastic) of the Fantastic Four, but he has come into conflict with a lot of other Marvel icons such as Spider-Man, Doctor Strange, the X-Men and, of course, the Avengers.
He’s considered one of Marvel’s greatest villains of all time, and if given a good on-screen portrayal, he’d be an amazing villain for the entire Marvel Universe in the near future. Hopefully Disney gets it right though, because 20th Century Fox sure as hell didn’t.
Kang the Conqueror
Kang may not be well known to any of the more casual Marvel fans, but he’s got serious potential. Kang doesn’t have any superhuman abilities of such, but he is a genius as well as a master of time travel. He’s also kitted out with very advanced futuristic technology, making him a difficult and unpredictable foe.
With Kang’s time traveling capability, he could also really mess around with any existing story arks that we’ve already seen. It’s not likely, but could his first appearance be involved in undoing Thanos’s evil-doings from Infinity War?
Taskmaster
You may not have heard of Taskmaster unless you’re a hardcore Marvel fan, but he is quite the threat when you’re on the wrong side of him. There’s already rumours of him making an appearance in the MCU at some point, but where he’ll turn up first, who knows?
The thing that makes Taskmaster dangerous is that he has the ability to learn from his foes. If he sees our heroes in action, he can easily master their strategies and moves and counter them without a problem. His outfit is a little weird in the comics, so if he were to be on screen I’d expect him to be more like his incarnation in the recent Spider-Man PS4 game.
Do you think any of these three major villains will be a massive threat in Marvel’s cinematic future? Let us know your thoughts in the comments.
