Man of the Month – May 2017

Sir David Attenborough

As you should be well aware by now, the national treasure Sir David Attenborough has turned 91 this month and he shows no signs of retirement just yet. For as long as most of us at the Man Wants office can remember, this absolute gem of a man has been here to educate us about our beautiful planet and its inhabitants.

Sir David Frederick Attenborough OM CH CVO CBE FRS FSA was born on the 8th May 1926 in Isleworth, London. He is a veteran broadcaster and naturalist, best known for writing and presenting the nine Life series in conjunction with the BBC Natural History Unit. He is also a former senior manager at the BBC, having served as controller of BBC Two and director of programming for BBC Television in the 60’s and 70’s.

Sir Attenborough is the middle of three brothers. His older brother was the late producer, director and actor Richard Attenborough, where his younger brother was the late motor executive John Attenborough. In 1950 he married Jane Elizabeth Ebsworth Oriel and they had two children – Robert and Susan. Unfortunately, Jane passed in 1997 after 47 years of marriage and Sir David never remarried since – admitting it can get lonely without her.

While considered a “national treasure” here in the UK, he has expressed he doesn’t like being referred to as such. Sir David is a very humble man, and you can’t help but admire him for it. He had a pacemaker fitted in 2013, but that hasn’t stopped him in his line of work, commenting:

“If I was earning my money by hewing coal I would be very glad indeed to stop. But I’m not. I’m swanning round the world looking at the most fabulously interesting things. Such good fortune.”

After the success of Planet Earth II, we can still expect more as we have Blue Planet II inbound. We truly hope for more after that if he’s feeling it.
