Man of the Month – March 2017

Tony Bellew

Here at the Man Wants office, we have concluded that our Man of the Month for March this year will be none other than the current WBC cruiserweight title holder, Tony Bellew.

Anthony “Tony” Bellew was born on the 30th November, 1982 in Liverpool. He is the current WBC (World Boxing Council) cruiserweight title holding and has been since 2016. Previous titles he’s held includes: Commonwealth light-heaveight (2010, to 2011), British Light-heavyweight (2011 to 2014) and European Cruiserweight (2015 to 2016).

In his amateur years, Bellew is a three-time former ABA (Amateur Boxing Association) heavyweight champion. While fighting out of Liverpool’s Rotunda ABC, Bellew managed to claim both the 2002 and 2003 novice ABA title’s by knocking out every single man he faced, except for Rob Hough. Hough went the whole 3 rounds from Paramount ABC in the under 10 bouts championships. Once eligible for the Senior championships, Bellew stepped up to the 91kg heavweight class and added even more titles to his collection, although losing to Danny Price in 2006.

Since his professional debut appearance, Bellew has taken part in 32 fights, 29 of which he has come out victorious. 2 of them he lost where the other he drew. 19 of his victories were by KO.

Bellew’s professional debut was on the 6th October, 2007 in Nottingham Arena against Jamie Ambler. He came out victorious via a TKO on the second round. However, this was just the beginning. He continued a further 16 victorious fights, KO’ing Wayne Brooks and Phil Goodwin along the way, until he came against Nathan Cleverly on the 15th October, 2011. In his home town of Liverpool at the Echo Arena, Bellew lost to Cleverly after a majority decision, his first professional loss since his 2007 debut.

This didn’t stop him though, he continued on with 3 more victories under his belt but then came to a draw against Isaac Chilemba on the 30th March, 2013. However, after a rematch on the 25th May, 2013, Bellew came out victorious by unanimous decision. With only one loss since by TKO to Adonis Stevenson in Quebec, Bellew continues to be on top of his game, as recent as this month against David Haye.

Bellew has proved himself a real winner in his 10 year professional career, and is probably going to impress us even further yet. With Haye in the talks of a rematch with Bellew, we can expect a lot more to come from this champion.
